Resisting Caste: The Journey of Dalit Buddhists in Mumbai
Mumbai serves as the base for many Dalit Buddhists who have started to raise their voices for their right to oppose caste oppression that has been tormenting them for ages. Following Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, many also state that they are ‘Indian and Indian only’ which is in strong conflict with the external caste-based segregation. The question remains, however, how are they able to fight something that has been so much rooted in such a society for so long?
There is also bonding, pride being created among its members through community activities and cultural events. These functions are not just about remembering their glorious past but also about preparing for the battle which is social justice. With active participation, they are seeking rights that have been historically denied to them such as access to education, jobs and being represented.
The movement has its factors, what are they? Activists are using culture, education and organizing to wake people up and overturn the status. And they are doing it, ready to prove that the change in the world, in the future will not happen without people fighting for it.
In the age of development and growth, the struggles and oppression that the Dalit Buddhist community suffered, stands as a reminder. Throughout their struggle, however, one issue stands out- the need for Living without barriers. Their journey raises an important question.
