💬 Legal Action Against One8 Commune for Smoking Zone Violation
Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune, a popular pub and restaurant in Bengaluru, has found itself in legal hot water yet again—this time for failing to provide a designated smoking zone as required by law. The Cubbon Park Police registered a suo motu case against the establishment under sections 4 and 21 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). These sections mandate that hotels, restaurants, and similar venues must have specified areas for smoking to protect non-smokers and comply with public health regulations.
Government Crackdown and Stricter Tobacco Laws
This action comes as part of a broader crackdown by Bengaluru City Police, following the Karnataka government’s recent measures to tighten tobacco regulations. Notably, the state has just imposed a complete ban on hookah bars and raised the legal age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21. The updated COTPA Amendment Act, 2024, which received presidential assent, underscores the government’s commitment to curbing tobacco use and protecting public health.
Previous Controversies Surrounding One8 Commune
One8 Commune is no stranger to controversy. In June last year, the venue was booked for operating beyond permitted business hours. Later, in December, it received a notice from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) over alleged fire safety violations and the absence of a clearance certificate from the Fire Department.
The Road Ahead for Hospitality Businesses
The latest case highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by hospitality businesses in Bengaluru, especially those owned by high-profile personalities. As regulations tighten and enforcement intensifies, establishments like One8 Commune must ensure strict compliance to avoid legal setbacks and maintain their reputation.
