💬 Bridging Perspectives
Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj witnessed a tragic stampede-like situation as millions gathered for the auspicious 'Amrit Snan' on Mauni Amavasya. This day is considered highly significant in Hinduism, believed to be a time when the sacred waters of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati turn into 'Amrit' or nectar. With an estimated 10 crore pilgrims expected to attend, the event was marked by heightened security measures and extensive preparations to manage the massive influx of devotees.
Panic and Injuries Erupt
However, chaos ensued early in the morning when a surge of pilgrims attempting to reach the Sangam led to panic and injuries. Reports indicate that approximately 30 women were injured during the incident, necessitating immediate medical attention at a central hospital set up within the Mela area. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of desperation as people struggled to escape the pressure of the crowd, with one devotee lamenting, "There was no chance for escape; pushing came from all sides."
Government Response and Public Sentiment
In response to the unfolding crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation and ensure that relief measures were implemented swiftly. The Chief Minister urged devotees to avoid heading towards the Sangam and instead take their holy dip at closer ghats to alleviate crowd pressure. He emphasised that local authorities were working diligently to manage the situation and aid those affected.
Condolences and Continued Faith
The incident drew immediate reactions from various government officials. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his condolences and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured. President Droupadi Murmu also extended her sympathies to the families of those affected, highlighting the emotional toll of such tragedies during significant religious gatherings. Despite this unfortunate event, many pilgrims continued their spiritual journey, hoping for blessings and healing.
