💬 A Routine Journey Turns Deadly
On June 12, 2025, what began as a routine international flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick ended in unimaginable tragedy. Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 people, crashed just minutes after takeoff, plunging into the Meghani Nagar neighborhood near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The disaster has been described as the worst single-aircraft accident in Indian aviation history, sending shockwaves across the nation and the world.
Moments Before Impact
The aircraft departed at 13:38 IST, climbing to an altitude of just 625 feet before the crew issued a distress “MAYDAY” call. Within moments, the plane lost contact with air traffic control and crashed into a hostel building in the B.J. Medical College complex, igniting a massive fire and sending thick black smoke billowing over the city. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple explosions and witnessing the wreckage strewn across the crash site.
Devastation on the Ground
The impact was catastrophic not only for those on board but also for residents on the ground. The aircraft struck a hostel housing medical student, leading to additional casualties and injuries among the local population. As of the latest reports, at least 204 bodies have been recovered, with dozens more injured and hospitalised, including students from the hostel. The sole known survivor is a 40-year-old who managed to escape by jumping from an emergency window.
Swift Emergency Response
Emergency services, including fire brigades, ambulances, and the Central Industrial Security Force, responded within minutes, battling flames and dense smoke to rescue survivors and contain the disaster. The Indian Army was also deployed to assist with debris clearance and medical aid, while all flights at Ahmedabad Airport were suspended to facilitate rescue operations.
A Nation in Mourning
The crash has left the nation in mourning. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed his devastation, while Air India’s Chairman N. Chandrasekaran conveyed condolences and assured support for affected families. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities promising a thorough probe and continued updates.
