💬 Bridging Perspectives
On Thursday evening, the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, was rocked by the tragic death of Prisha Shah, an 18-year-old Nepalese undergraduate student. Prisha, a first-year Computer Science B.Tech student from Birgunj, Nepal, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room by the warden around 8:00 pm. Authorities were immediately alerted, and a forensic team was dispatched to the scene. The case is being treated as a suspected suicide, pending the outcome of the post-mortem examination.
A Wake-Up Call for Student Safety
This is the second such death involving a Nepalese student at KIIT in less than three months. In February, Prakriti Lamsal, another Nepalese B.Tech student, was found dead in her hostel room. Her death triggered protests and allegations of harassment and institutional negligence. The earlier case also revealed that the student had filed a complaint about alleged sexual harassment by a fellow student, but reportedly, no action was taken by the university authorities.
Demands for Justice
Student organisations have described the incidents as a “disturbing pattern” of neglect and demanded accountability from the university administration. They insist that these are not isolated cases and have called for an impartial and speedy investigation to determine if negligence or misconduct contributed to the tragedies.
Institutional Response and Ongoing Investigation
Police have registered an unnatural death case and are questioning hostel students to ascertain if Prisha Sah had shown any signs of distress or shared her concerns. The university has stated it is fully cooperating with the investigation, and the Nepal Embassy has been notified. The post-mortem will be conducted after her parents arrive in Bhubaneswar.
