Empowering Women
Tamil Nadu government rolled out a transformative initiative: the “pink auto” scheme. With its unmistakable pink hue, the auto rickshaw is more than just a mode of transport—it’s a symbol of women’s empowerment and a step toward gender equality in public spaces. But as the scheme gains traction, a critical challenge has emerged: men driving these vehicles, threatening to derail the very purpose of the program.
The Vision Behind Pink Autos
Launched by the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, the pink auto scheme aims to provide sustainable employment for women from economically weaker sections. Each beneficiary receives a grant of Rs 1 lakh to help purchase a CNG or hybrid auto rickshaw. The autos, stationed at major city railway stations and bus stands, are not only painted pink for visibility but are also equipped with GPS and a dedicated women’s helpline (181), ensuring safety for both drivers and passengers.
A Growing Concern
Despite clear guidelines, reports have surfaced of men driving pink autos, often under the pretext of helping out female family members who are temporarily unable to work. While the intention may seem harmless, this practice undermines the scheme’s core objective: to carve out a safe and empowering space for women in the male-dominated transport sector. As one woman driver aptly put it, “If the rule of ‘men not allowed to drive pink autos’ is not followed, the scheme turns futile.”
Stern Action and Its Importance
Recognising the gravity of the issue, Chennai traffic police and the Social Welfare Department have begun cracking down on violators. Autos driven by men are being seized, and fines are imposed to deter further infractions. Officials warn that repeated violations will result in permanent confiscation of the vehicle. These strict measures are not punitive but protective, ensuring that opportunities created for women remain in their hands.
The Road Ahead
For the pink auto scheme to succeed, continuous monitoring and strict enforcement are crucial. The government’s proactive stance sends a clear message: women’s empowerment initiatives must be respected and preserved. By ensuring that pink autos remain exclusively for women drivers, Tamil Nadu is not just offering jobs—it’s paving the way for safer, more inclusive cities where women can thrive behind the wheel.
