India and China Commit to Maintaining Peace Along LAC in 31st WMCC Meeting

The 31st meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) was held by India and China, where both sides resolved to uphold peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Indian delegation was headed by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia) from the Ministry of External Affairs, while Hong Liang the Director-General of the Boundary and Oceans Department of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs led the Chinese side.
Two sides had open, constructive and forward-looking discussions that aimed at reducing differences and resolving ongoing issues quickly as instructed by two foreign ministers during their latest talks. It was agreed that contact would be stepped up through diplomatic as well as military channels to jointly maintain peace and respect for LAC which would help restore normalcy in bilateral relations.

Amidst ongoing ethnic tensions, Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, promises to restore peace

In response to escalating ethnic violence that has left 226 dead since May 2023 between Kuki-zo and Meitei groups, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed confidence that peace would be restored in six months. He noted the need for dialogue while appointing Dinganglung Gangmei as an emissary to facilitate talks between conflicting parties.

Singh who identifies himself as a Chief Minister for all, rejected calls for his resignation claiming that he has not committed any wrongs. According to him, the conflict was sparked by his crackdown on illegal drug trafficking and migration which angered Kukis. Singh also ruled out separate administration demands insisting on Manipur’s integrity while advocating development in hilly areas. Reaffirming his determination to curb extremist actions emanating from pro-Meitei groups, he emphasized continued support from the central government towards stabilizing the state.
