💬 Bridging Perspectives
A 29-year-old teacher, Aleena Benny, working at a Catholic-run, government-aided school in Kerala, tragically took her own life after allegedly being denied her salary for six years. Aleena had been working at St Joseph’s Lower Primary School in Kodenchery, Kozhikode district, and previously at another school under the same management. Her death has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the management practices of aided schools in the state.
Allegations and Claims
Aleena's father alleges that the school management is responsible for her death, stating that his daughter was compelled to agree in writing that she would forego her salary for five years of work at a previous school under the same educational agency. He claims this agreement was made with the expectation that her appointment at the current school would be cleared. Despite this, she was allegedly not paid, causing significant financial strain. The school PTA reportedly mobilised funds to help her with daily bus fare, but the church management allegedly provided no support.
The manager of the Thamarassery diocese corporate educational agency, Fr. Joseph Varghese, claims that the application for Aleena's permanent appointment was submitted to the education department but has not been cleared due to "technical issues." He stated that there are other teachers in similar situations working at schools under the agency. However, Aleena's father disputes this, asserting that he was told by the corporate manager that some teachers have not received salaries for as long as nine years.
Government Response
Kerala's Education Minister V Sivankutty has sought a report on the incident from the director general of education, promising action upon receiving the report. This indicates a recognition of the severity of the situation and a commitment to investigate the matter further.
Broader Implications
This tragic incident highlights potential systemic issues within aided schools in Kerala, particularly concerning the financial security and rights of teachers. The allegations of delayed or unpaid salaries, coupled with claims of forced agreements to waive income, point to possible exploitative practices. The case also raises questions about the efficiency and responsiveness of the education department in processing and clearing teacher appointments. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring fair treatment and timely compensation for educators, who play a vital role in society.
