💬 Bridging Perspectives
In a bizarre turn of events at Delhi University's Lakshmibai College, the campus has become a battleground for tradition and modernity. Ronak Khatri, the president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), smeared cow dung on the principal's office walls in protest. This act of defiance was in response to Principal Pratyush Vatsala's initiative to coat classrooms with cow dung, put as a method to combat the heat.
Student Leader Challenges Traditional Methods
Khatri, who filmed his actions and posted it on social media, argued that the principal's actions were "absurd and unscientific." The video which went viral shows him and other students applying cow dung to the walls and washroom of the principal's office, a move intended to grab attention and challenge the administration's methods.
Principal’s Defence
Principal Vatsala defended actions by stating that the cow dung application was part of a research project titled 'Study of Heat Stress Control by Using Traditional Indian Knowledge.' explained that the study was being conducted in cabins and that using natural mud was harmless. However, this explanation has done little to quell the controversy.
Divided Opinions and Growing Debate
The incident has triggered a widespread debate within the university. Many students have voiced their concerns, citing potential health risks and questioning the scientific validity of the practice. The lack of an official statement from the college administration has further fuelled the controversy, leaving students and faculty divided over the appropriateness of blending traditional practices with modern education.
What Lies Ahead for Lakshmibai College?
As the saga unfolds, it remains to be seen how the university will address the concerns raised by students and whether the principal's research will stand up to scientific scrutiny. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between preserving cultural heritage and embracing scientific innovation in educational institutions.
