💬 Bridging Perspectives
In a shocking incident, a 74-year-old woman from Pune was conned out of ₹2.57 crore by cybercriminals. Posing as police officers, the scammers falsely accused her and her son of being involved in money laundering. The elaborate scheme involved confining her to her home under "digital arrest," coercing her into transferring her life savings.
How the Scam Unfolded
The nightmare began when the woman received a call from someone claiming to be a senior police inspector. She was told her biometric data was used in a money laundering case linked to a defunct airline. Through threatening video calls, the fraudsters convinced her that she could avoid arrest by paying them a large sum of money. They isolated her, allowing her to leave her home only to make bank transfers.
Driven by fear and stress, the woman transferred money to multiple accounts through RTGS and IMPS. It was only when she ran out of funds and asked relatives for help that the truth came to light. Her family realized she had been scammed and immediately reported the incident to the police.
Stay Alert and Stay Safe
Authorities are urging the public to be extremely cautious of such scams. It is important to verify any legal claims made over the phone and avoid making any financial transactions without proper verification. Always double-check before sending money and never give in to pressure from unknown callers.
