💬 Bridging Perspectives
What began as an ordinary Monday morning commute for Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose and his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta, escalated into a high-profile road rage incident in Bengaluru. The couple, both IAF officers, were en route to Kempegowda International Airport from the DRDO enclave when a confrontation with a local biker, Vikas Kumar, spiraled out of control.
Conflicting Narratives and Viral Videos
Initially, Bose posted a video on social media, showing his injuries and alleging that he was assaulted and verbally abused by a group of Kannada-speaking individuals. He claimed the altercation was triggered by a language dispute and that he and his wife were targeted for being "outsiders" in Karnataka. This narrative quickly gained traction online, sparking heated debates about regionalism and safety for non-Kannadigas in Bengaluru.
However, the story took a dramatic turn when CCTV footage from the scene emerged. Contrary to Bose's claims, the video evidence reportedly showed him as the aggressor, physically assaulting Vikas Kumar after a verbal exchange. The footage contradicted the initial version of events and prompted police to reassess the situation.
Police Action and Legal Fallout
Following the surfacing of the CCTV footage, Vikas Kumar filed a counter-complaint, alleging that he was attacked without grave provocation. Based on this complaint and the new evidence, Bengaluru police registered a case against Wing Commander Bose for "attempt to murder" and assault under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Byappanahalli Police Station.
Earlier, the police had arrested Vikas Kumar based on the complaint filed by Bose's wife. However, authorities now emphasise that both parties engaged in violence and that the conflict could have been avoided. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Devaraj D. clarified, "Both attacked each other. This is a clear-cut case of road rage, not related to any language or region."
Public Outcry and Social Media Reaction
The incident, amplified by viral videos and social media commentary, has ignited public debate. While Bose's initial video drew sympathy and outrage against alleged regional discrimination, the subsequent release of CCTV footage shifted the narrative, raising questions about the reliability of viral claims and the dangers of trial by social media.
Vikas Kumar's family is now demanding justice and compensation, maintaining that he was the victim of an unprovoked attack. Meanwhile, the IAF officer faces serious legal consequences as the investigation continues.
